Tom Harvey Award for Citizenship

Nominations are now open for 2010

The Tom Harvey Award for Citizenship recognises the outstanding contribution of a young Australian who has assisted in the development of other young people (and their families) by providing better opportunities either through literacy, education and employment programs.

The Award includes a cash prize of $2,000.00, and is presented at the annual Commonwealth Day Lunch held at Parliament House, Sydney on Monday 8 th March 2010.

Commonwealth Day is celebrated across the Commonwealth of Nations – a voluntary association of 53 member nations, including 1.8 billion people or 30% of the world's population.

The Award is made as part of the Australia Youth Trust which aims to assist young people working together within Australia and developing Commonwealth nations within our region. It supports projects such as:

•  the relief of poverty and suffering

•  literacy, education, training and employment opportunities

•  the promotion of youth leadership exchange.

 

The aims of the Trust are:

(i) To provide financial support to Commonwealth and other agencies providing relief programs to young people suffering from poverty, illness, exploitation and abuse in developing countries. (relief of suffering & poverty)

(ii) To provide better opportunities for young people and their families including literacy, education, employment and training programs. (education & training)

(iii) To provide funding for students to travel, study and work in a developing Commonwealth country. (facilitating youth exchange)

 

Selection Criteria:

The Tom Harvey Award for Citizenship recipient must be an Australian citizen aged between 15 and 30 years and demonstrate their achievements reflecting the aims of the Australia Youth Trust. The successful nominee must also be available to attend the annual Commonwealth Day Luncheon (as our guest) to receive the award.

All nominations will be considered by the Australia Youth Trust Board.

Some past recipients of the Tom Harvey Award for Citizenship are:

•  Tammy van Wysse, for her marathon swim to raise awareness of the plight of the Murray-Darling

•  Veronica Anderson, for her rehabilitation and care of youth people through the Youth Off the Streets program

•  James Bradford Moody , in relation to his work as a special advisor to the UN Secretary-General on sustainable development issues

•  Christina Parasyn, for her contribution to development programs, for those with disabilities, as an Australian Ambassador for Development in the Maldives

•  Melissa Hurd, for her support and dedication in providing education and training opportunities for the street children in Dhaka , Bangladesh

•  Angela Bailey, for her contribution in establishing a school in a village for underprivileged children in Tanzania

•  Karangi NSW Public School, for their contribution to the environment by working together with the local community for major regeneration, minimizing waste and establishing its own Youth Environmental Council

•  Clary Castrission, for his initiative to build orphanages in Bangalore , India to provide education to those most vulnerable so they can seek better futures. His program 40K HOME is an inspiration.
